Congratulations to Amy Caywood, Washington County VA CCT Member

Mrs. Amy Caywood, 7th Grade Life Science Teacher and Washington County VA CCT member.

Congratulations to Mrs. Amy Caywood for being selected as the Washington County Teacher of the Year and the Middle School Teacher of the Year. She is a graduate of Virginia Tech with a degree in Biology and Chemistry and in 2000 she received her Masters Degree in Science Education. Mrs. Caywood has been teaching in Washington County for 12 years and is a valuable member of our faculty where she serves as the 7th Grade Team Leader, the SCA sponsor, is a member of the School-based Attendance and Discipline Committee and the SACS Data Assessment Committee. Another exciting opportunity that she has shared with students has been as the co-coordinator of the AITES pilot program. This is a 5 year grant from Virginia Tech that gives girls the opportunity to explore the world of science, math and technology through mini-workshops and field trips. It is the goal of this program to encourage girls to enter the Information Technology field through their college and career choices.

Mrs. Caywood loves teaching science and showing the students how it is relevant in their everyday lives. Her hope is to inspire students to ask questions about the world around them and to learn to use science to find the answers to those questions. She was also selected as the Damascus Middle School October "Star Polisher" for all of her dedicated work both in the classroom and beyond. She will now serve as the Washington County nominee for Region 7 Teacher of the Year. The students and staff of Damascus Middle School are very proud of her well deserved recognition.
